Department of Computer Science
Welcome to the department of Computer Science!
We are excelling at teaching, research and community services. For the last years several pioneering students graduated from the department.
The department has undergraduate program where every year a number of very competitive both in the national and international are graduating. The department has one MSc program in Computer Science and a PhD program in partnership with the German government.
There are 21 instructors currently active and two of the department members are pursuing their PhD. The current Faculty of Informatics was established in academic year 2002-03 as “Department of Computer Science” under the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The first batch of its students was 2-year diploma students, which were also the last ones in the line. In academic year 2003-04, it had received its first batch of degree students in the stream of Computer Science. In the same year, it had also graduated its only diploma students.
In academic year 2007-08, following the BPR studies, the department was renamed as a “School of Informatics” offering degree in three programs that it still running. The programs are “Computer Science”, “Information Technology” and “Information System”. It was the same year when School was incorporated into the Institute of Technology (IoT), instead of Faculty of Natural Science (FNS). Later it has been called Faculty of Informatics. Department of Computer Science is one of the biggest and growing members of Faculty of Informatics under Institute of Technology, Hawassa University. For the last ftwenty years the department is training number of students in the fields of computer science. In doing so, it has contributed potential manpower to different private and governmental sectors of the country as well as the global market. Besides delivering courses, instructors and students are involving in the business incubation unit where students and instructors can work on real time computational problems and create a market for themselves and the university. Outputs from the incubation can solve problems of the community and contribute a valuable impact on the technology supported country development. Staffs of the department are working on different software and network solutions for the university as well as on researches that will allow the community to be familiar with technological advancements for problem solving. Staffs of the department are involved in innovating different solutions that can contribute to solving the global technological problems. Different community training programs were provided by the department to enrich people’s knowledge regarding the computing technologies that shows the department’s closeness to the society.
With a fast growth of the AI, computing industry and high requirement of skills, knowledge and resources, it is the responsibility of the department to engage in digitisation, research and technology transfer for enhanced education and development. The department aims for research works, linkage with industries, academic and scholarly activities so that to become a centre of excellence.
