Faculty of Manufacturing Engineering
The Faculty of Manufacturing Engineering is one of the largest and most dynamic faculties within the Institute of Technology at Hawassa University. Currently, we offer six undergraduate programs that are designed to meet the growing demand for skilled engineers across a range of industrial sectors. These programs include:
- Chemical Engineering
- Electromechanical Engineering
- Garment Engineering
- Industrial Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Textile Engineering
In addition to our undergraduate offerings, we have launched a postgraduate program in MSc in Industrial Engineering and Logistics Management. Furthermore, we are proud to share that the MSc program in Manufacturing Technology has successfully passed both internal and external curriculum review processes and is now awaiting final approval from academic standards for official launch.
It is both an honor and a privilege for me to have served as an active member of this institute for more than fourteen years. Over the years, the dedication of our top management and the tireless efforts of our faculty members have played a pivotal role in the growth and development of our institute and faculty. While we celebrate the achievements we’ve made so far, we recognize that there is still more to accomplish.
Our vision is to become one of the leading faculties within the Institute—renowned for innovation, engineering research, and high-quality education—to better serve our community and contribute to national development. It is widely recognized that engineering is not only essential for economic growth but also fundamental in transforming lives and solving societal challenges. That is why our students—young, energetic, and driven—are deeply passionate about their studies and committed to making a difference.
Currently, the Faculty of Manufacturing enrolls 2,197 undergraduate and 29 postgraduate students from across the country. These talented individuals come here to gain both theoretical foundations and practical experience under the guidance of our hardworking and purpose-driven academic staff. Beyond classroom instruction, we place a strong emphasis on nurturing technical competence, problem-solving skills, and entrepreneurial thinking.
The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSc IE)
The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering (BSc IE) is a five-year undergraduate program offered at leading Ethiopian universities, such as Addis Ababa University (AAU), Hawassa University (HU), Gonder university, Bahir Dar University (BDU), Dirre Dawaa university, Ambo University, Bulehora University and Debrebirhan University. The curriculum combines engineering fundamentals, management principles, and applied mathematics to optimize systems in manufacturing, logistics, and service industries. Core courses include Operations Research, Production Planning, Supply Chain Management, Quality Control, Ergonomics, and Systems Simulation. Students also gain hands-on experience through industrial internships, capstone projects, and lab work in facilities like the AAU Institute of Technology.
The program prepares graduates for careers in production, logistics, process improvement, and project management across industries such as textiles, construction, food processing, and healthcare. Emphasis is placed on efficiency, cost reduction, and sustainability in Ethiopian industries. Additionally, students develop problem-solving, data analysis, and leadership skills, making them competitive in both local and international job markets. Some universities offer specialisations in areas like Lean Manufacturing or Automation, aligning with Ethiopia’s growing industrial sector. Graduates often find employment in factories, consulting firms, government agencies, and multinational companies operating in Ethiopia.
