Faculty of Informatics
The Faculty of Informatics at Hawassa University’s Institute of Technology is a hub for innovation and excellence in computing and information sciences. Initially established in 2008 as the School of Informatics, it began with three undergraduate programs: Computer Science, Information Technology, and Information Systems. In 2017, following the restructuring of the Institute of Technology, the school was elevated to Faculty status, and its academic programs were reorganized into three independent departments:
- Department of Computer Science
- Department of Information Technology
- Department of Information Systems
Each department offers a distinct undergraduate program:
- BSc in Computer Science
- BSc in Information Technology
- BSc in Information Systems
In response to growing societal and market demands for advanced computing professionals, the Faculty recently launched a postgraduate program, MSc in Computer Science, offered in both regular and weekend modalities under the Department of Computer Science. In addition, the Faculty has been actively delivering continuing education programs at the undergraduate level through evening and weekend classes, thereby expanding access to quality IT education for the wider community.
The Faculty is also engaged in thematic research, community service, and technology transfer initiatives, contributing to national development and the digital transformation agenda.
All programs are delivered by a team of qualified and dedicated academic staff, including:
- 5 Assistant Professors (4 male, 1 female)
- 35 Lecturers
- 3 Assistant Lecturers
- 7 Graduate Assistants (Level II)
- 18 Technical Assistants
The Faculty of Informatics fosters a culture of academic excellence, innovation, and continuous professional development. It remains committed to producing competent graduates equipped with the knowledge, skills, and mindset required to lead in the fast-evolving world of information and communication technology.

Department of Information Technology
The Information Technology Department is one of the academic units in Hawassa University, Institute of Technology, faculty of Informatics which is committed to delivering a comprehensive education in the field of IT, featuring two undergraduate and one postgraduate programs. The Programs are Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (BSc-IT), Bachelor of Education in Information Technology (Bed IT) and Masters of Science in Information Technology (MSc in IT). With a dedicated faculty, the department aims to cultivate skilled professionals who can thrive in various sectors of the IT field.
Department of Computer Science
We are excelling at teaching, research and community services. For the last years several pioneering students graduated from the department. The department has undergraduate program where every year a number of very competitive both in the national and international are graduating. The department has one MSc program in Computer Science and a PhD program in partnership with the German government.
Department of Information Systems
The Department of Information Systems (IS) is one of the 18 academic units within the Hawassa University Institute of Technology and is one of three undergraduate programs housed under the Faculty of Informatics. Since its establishment in 2007 G.C., the department has been committed to delivering quality education and fostering innovation in the field of information systems.
